Well it’s called the Get Lost Podcast for a reason, and this time we got pretty flippin lost. Our mixer blew up because @joesills didn’t realize the Botswanan power grid is very different from the U.S., but thanks to some last minute engineering from @margreen_s we were able to scrap together this week’s show in the Okavango Delta.

We hope you’ll join us as Keitopetse Kagande talks to us about what it’s like to grow up in the Okavango Delta, what climate issues the area is facing today and what it feels like to have a 45-minute standoff with a lion.

100 years ago, the world was enjoying a golden age of new technology. Automobiles were taking making long distance travel more accessible. Aeroplanes were beginning to cross oceans, taking hours to do what ships once did in days.

And explorers, as always, were keen to put humanity’s latest innovations to use in the field. Among those innovations was the ill-fated airship Italia, which set off from Milan with twenty people in its belly destined for the North Pole.

What happened next is one of the most harrowing tales of polar exploration in history, one in which this week’s guest is a bonafide expert.

Join SPECIAL GUEST HOST @meredithforreal and author Mark Piesing to retell the story of his book, N-4 Down: The Hunt for Arctic Airship Italia.

A few days into her young life, wildlife monitors realized Impi was a fighter. They laughed as she fought off warthogs and jousted with a stick in her mother’s horn. They didn’t realize little Impi would need those fighting skills almost immediately.

When a pride of lions took interest in the young calf, conservationist @nadiamarion knew there would be trouble. Impi could battle young warthogs and sticks—but lions were another matter.

In what became one of the most intense weeks of her life, Nadia and her team scrambled to keep the lions at bay for 8 days, using 24/7 lion and rhino watches to protect the life of a calf vital to the future of her species.

Who would be mad enough to drive more than 5,000 miles cross the rugged backbone of Asia? Travel writer Jamie Lafferty set out to find out.

In what became a bleary-eyed race against visa restrictions, corrupt police and deteriorating machinery, he hopped in a makeshift rally car to witness the first ever Central Asia Rally.

It’s not his most harrowing travel tale, and he joins us now to relive the journey of a lifetime through Hungary, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Scottish travel writer Jamie Lafferty (@travel_journo) lands his first big assignment for The Guardian when he’s sent to cover a 5,000 mile overland rally from Budapest to Murghab, Tajikistan. The plan? Buy a used car in Hungary, drive it across Central Asia and sell it in Dushanbe.

Like all great adventures, the plan goes south in a hurry when Jamie’s route is blocked by border guards and his team is forced to find an entirely new route to one of the world’s most remote towns. Along the way, they find themselves traveling through ancient lands along the silk road.

Would you make the trek???
